The Costa Brava stretches from the French border down Cataluna's Mediterranean coast as far as the resort of Blanes. However, most tour operators also include all resorts down to Barcelona and beyond as far as Sitges in the S. At its full extent, the Costa Brava comprises 135 mls of mainly pine-clad, rocky coastline with some fine sandy bays. Package holidays effectively started here in the 1960s so some of the resorts now look rather dated, overdeveloped and crowded whilst others - especially at the northern end - still retain much of their original charm. The main airport lies 9 mls SW of the inland town of Gerona on the Costa Brava.
